Training Strategy

Happy New Year!  Along with making personal new year’s resolutions, it’s also a great time to step back and think about your organizational resolutions as well. How can you make 2020 your organization’s most productive year yet? What steps can you take to optimize your workforce?

I personally like the idea of creating a training strategy, and implementing it (after all, a plan is useless without action!). Here are some tips to create an effective training plan:

  • Make a list of all the training you already have or offer your employees. Evaluate it – what’s working and what isn’t. Understand why some training has been more effective than others.

  • Solicit ideas and thoughts from employees on training gaps in your organization. Involve employees as much as possible in the broader training discussion because you’ll need their buy-in to effectively implement any training plans.

  • Understand your organizational context. What are management expectations around training? Do you have a budget to implement new training initiatives?

  • Consider future needs in your training plan, not just the skills you need today. In other words, don’t just think about retirements and succession planning, but literally how your industry might change in the future, and how you can plan to have the skills available when you need them to meet those changes.

  • Don't neglect employee onboarding; it's a critical part of your training strategy.

  • Continuously evaluate training return on investment (ROI). That is, the change in profits that are resulting from your training, divided by the cost of the training (multiply by 100 to get a percentage). If your ROI isn’t positive, or isn’t as high as you think it should be, re-evaluate your approach.

If you’d like support in making the most out of your training, we’re offering a brand new package to help you out:
